Private sector employers have been blasted by the new chairman of the Employment Rights Tribunal (ERT) for trampling workers’ rights in disciplinary matters.
Retired high court judge Justice Christopher Blackman has also lambasted at least one Government ministry for “ruling by edict” with the threat of non-payment of salaries if the edicts were not followed.
Justice Blackman, who took up the reins of the tribunal last July, was speaking at a press conference held to outline the progress the ERT had made over the past few months, at the tribunal’s Warrens Office Complex headquarters on Friday.
He said one thing that had become apparent from the number of cases which he had heard so far was that employers were ignoring the rights of their workers during disciplinary matters. (HLE)
