Jones, Burke on show

Record-breaker Jonathan Jones and Mario Burke will headline the overseas-based athletes when the National Athletics Championships get into full swing at the National Stadium from 2:40 p.m. today.

This is the last chance for Barbadian athletes to qualify for the upcoming Pan Am Junior Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica, July 26 to 27 and the Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru, July 26 to August 11.

In addition, senior athletes such as Olympian Akela Jones, who is entered in the women’s long jump will also be hunting qualification for the IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar, September 28 to October 6.

Her target for Worlds will be 6.72 metres or 6.48 metres for the Pan Am Games.

Following last night’s heats, Jones will be racing in the men’s 400 final which is slated for 7:20 p.m. while Burke will bring the curtain down at 8 p.m., in the men’s 100 final after the semi-finals are contested from 4:50 p.m. (EZS)
