Minister of Commerce Dwight Sutherland says there are ongoing efforts to enhance standards to ensure that foods made from wheat flour are safe for human consumption.
He said a recent United States recall of several brands and types of wheat flour because of “possible e-coli contamination” was a reminder of the need for flour producers in Barbados and the region to “minimise the probability of recalls or any potentially fatal occurrences”.
The minister said the Barbados National Standards Institution (BNSI) had established a standard for wheat flour to reduce “associated risks in wheat flour production and to allay consumers concerns”. Similar work is also ongoing at the regional level.
Sutherland was speaking Wednesday when the Caribbean Millers’ Association (CMA) opened its 23rd annual general meeting at Infinity On The Beach, St Lawrence Gap, Christ Church, under the theme Flour – Safe Handling, Bio-Hazards And Recalls.
