TORONTO – Barbadian Patrick Husbands rolled out another double at Woodbine on Sunday, as he continued his desperate pursuit of championship leader Eurico Rosa Da Silva.
Chasing his fourth jockeys’ title at the celebrated Canadian racetrack, Husbands captured Race 3 with the three-year-old filly Venus Bay and completed his brace by winning Race 7 with another filly Valli With A Vow.
The 36-year-old now has 148 wins in the championship, seven adrift of Da Silva in what will be frenetic duel to the finish of the season scheduled to end December 5.
Going 1-1/16th miles in the CAN$59 700 Race Three, Husbands stalked the pace two-wide with Venus Bay, as Windancer’s Pride, Play On Words and GT’s Gone Dancing battled for the lead through the first half-mile.
In the stretch, Husbands got the 2-1 bid between his rivals, hit the front with a furlong to run before speeding to the finish 3-1/4 lengths clear.
Husbands then completed his brace when he steered the 6-1 bet Valli With A Vow to a handsome five-length win over the three-year-old upward fillies and mares.
The brown three-year-old filly chased the leaders early on in the seven-furlong trip before sweeping to the lead in the stretch and widening her advantage under a smooth hands ride from Husbands. (CMC)
