West Coast alternatives

It was billed as an event of “alternative energy”. And the penultimate night of last Saturday’s FWDFest delivered on its billing.
The event was part of the Holetown facility’s celebration for environment month and Bellairs’ week of activities.
From the acoustic styling of Wesu, through the conscious, hard hitting words of Inity to the alternative-flavoured set from indrani and Loveseat, the entertainment laid out under the stars at Folkstone Park was well worth braving the humidity and threatening showers.
The evening’s entertainment started with St James Secondary School songstress Jane Small whose heavenly voice soared to the trees as she thrilled the crowd with her gospel songs.
She was followed by an energetic group of dancers – Modern Motion – from her school and the school’s steelpan band.
Guitarist and singer Wesu, who played a 15 minute set, gave a fresh acoustic take on some of Bob Marley’s standards, including No Woman, No Cry and Waiting In Vain.
And he was quick to please, performing one of his originals as requested by someone in the crowd. indrani can only be described in one word: energetic!
She throws her all into a song; jumping around and stomping on stage, reaching for the crowd and then dropping to her knees as the emotion of the song dictates.
Canadian band Loveseat with lead singer Jen Mahon capped the night’s music festivities.
But the event was not all about music.
Spoken word artiste Inity elicited calls of approval with his conscious lyrics including him berating those who indulge in fast food to the exclusion of all else.
“So you say I’m finger licking/wait til my grease kick in/you say you done with yam and dasheen/you only want foods that mek with machine/so you like you chemical lick/nothing organic/you say natural food will make you vomit,” he told the crowd.
The audience was treated to a martial arts display by quartet Twin Camp Fighters; jewellery by Luna Jewellers and Azipho Copper Collection and T-shirt fashion design by Rhaj Paul.
