Kings RBTT Deacons continued stabilisation of their Goddards Enterprises division one volleyball kingdom by putting down the last serious uprising from the Chargers’ camp, 25-21, 25-12, 23-25, 20-25, 15-9, when the action continued on Thursday night at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex.
Deacons’ had lost their knockout title and then the opening match of the league to Cawmere. However, victories over the new knockout kings, Progressive, and now this win over the losing knockout finalists Chargers put Deacons in a pivotal position to successfully defend another league title.
hargers’ large fan base would have been extremely disappointed by their team’s weak performance in the first two sets with Elwyn Oxley, Jamal Nedd, Sheldon Roach and setter Rodney Mayers threatening to lead Deacons to a straight sets blowout.
However, in the third set Chargers’ leader Dale Addison smacked a ball into Oxley’s head to provide the impetus for Chargers to snatch the next two sets.
But Oxley remained unfazed as he continued to fight for the three sets victory. Strong blocking by Chargers and equally stingy ground defence denied Deacons in sets three and four.
Although Chargers were able to carry the game into the fifth set, Deacons’ fans enjoyed the last laugh and dance as former Senator Derek Alleyne and his drummers in the stands put on a Yoruba display of rhythm celebrating a total shut out in the decider.
The lame performance by Chargers’ spikers saw Deacons leading, 8-3, and, 13-6, to suggest an obvious outcome to the match. Deacons now enjoy a good advantage of just one loss while Chargers and Progressive have suffered two defeats each.
The other men’s game saw Progressive dismiss Cawmere in straight sets, 25-21, 25-22, 25-20. In the lone women’s match Rockets whipped British American Insurance Jackson Jaguars, 25-19, 34-32, 25-15. (KB)
