Defending champions, The City, will begin their defence of the David Thompson Memorial Constituency Council Football Classic when they take on St Joseph today at 6 p.m. at the Gall Hill Playing Field, St John.
After fighting back twice to defeat St Thomas 3-2 in a scintillating final to capture last year’s inaugural tournament, The City will have high hopes of repeating as champions and pocketing the $30 000 first prize.
They will, however, face stiff competition in the very first match against last year’s fourth placed team, St Joseph, who fell to St?Michael West in the third place match.
The City will also be without key players?Jeffrey Williams, Carl Joseph and Dwayne Mars, who played a significant role in that 2011 final, as they are playing in the LIME Pelican Football Challenge.
The second game at 8 p.m. is also set to be a thriller as both St John and St Andrew will not only be looking to open their account with a win, but to also improve on their performances last year, when neither managed to reach the semi-finals.
Teams from each of the 30 constituencies will signal the start of the event with a parade of their team colours at 4 p.m. This will precede an opening ceremony, during which Minister of Constituency Empowerment and Community Development Steve Blackett will deliver the opening remarks and Prime Minister Freundel Stuart the feature address.
The ceremony will also include an entertainment package with performances by ten-time calypso monarch Red Plastic Bag, dancers and other entertainers. (RB)
