THEY WALKED AWAY with the Parish Ambassadors title two straight years, and they are hoping to bring the award home once again.

Last Sunday, St Joseph officially launched its representatives Cadesha Rouse, 21, and Brandon Beckles, 20, during a ceremony at St Bernard’s Primary School.

Their project title Pride. Industry. People: St Joseph Uh Come From is being touted as a celebration of the parish through food, music and dance.

One of the key features is preserving the history of the landship in the community through a project that was launched May 17.

“Over 150 years old, the Barbados Landship is a unique form of traditional Barbadian masquerade. St Joseph was one of the lucky parishes to have a landship movement. The vanguard, as it was called, was the recreational activity of many cane-cutters, lighter- men, washerwomen and domestic servants in the parish. We’re seeking to relaunch this landship as an avenue for fostering community integration and to bridge the generational gap,” said Beckles, who like Rouse, hails from Airy Hill.

He explained that the music segment, launched May 7 aims to recognise and hone the skills of amateur musicians.

“Upon completion of this project, our Josephine musicians will showcase their talents by rendering a performance at our variety concert. This move towards empowering our young musicians plays a vital role in fostering a vibrant creative future for St Joseph,” said the university student.

In her short statement, Rouse said they are also advocating backyard gardening to encourage every resident to grow what they eat.

This project was launched May 12 with a planting ceremony at St Bernard’s Primary, which involved some students.

The project culminates with a food fest where produce would be sampled and sold.

St Joseph won the Parish Ambassadors title in 2012 and 2013. (WILLCOMM)
