There could soon be increased trade and interaction between Barbados and Prince Edward Island – a province of Canada – in the near future.
This, after the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) and the Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) yesterday at the Chamber’s Braemar Court offices in Brittons Hill, St Michael.
President of the BCCI, Andy Armstrong, said apart from joining the local Chamber in their 185th celebrations, the delegation from Canada had “a trade mission to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean”.
“What we are trying to do with this Memorandum of Understanding is trying to build on what is already a good relationship and formalize that and see how we can develop the trade and interaction between Barbados and Prince Edward Island and in a greater sense, the Atlantic provinces of Canada,” he said.
Armstrong said there was some existing trade between the two countries, noting that a lot of the imported potatoes, sardines and mackerel were from Prince Edward Island.
“We also have a lot of companies that we would like to market our products within the Atlantic provinces – the standard things such as the WIBISCO biscuits and our condiments.”
President of the Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce, Berni Wood, said she saw the signing as a positive move and looked forward to “a great trade relationship”. (MM)
