Barbadian superstar Rihanna has added her voice to those speaking out against the killing of unarmed blacks in the United States.
Recently, the killings of George Floyd by a police officer in Minnesota, jogger Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia and Breonna Taylor during a police raid on her apartment in Louisville, Kentucky have sparked protests and riots across some American cities.
In a strongly worded post on her Instagram page today under a picture of Floyd, Rihanna said the “the magnitude of devastation, anger, sadness I’ve felt has been overwhelming to say the least”.
Speaking to her 83 million followers and the wider world, Rihanna did not mince words in her description of former police officer Derek Chauvin who was charged with third degree murder of Floyd, saying she was haunted by the look on his face during the now viral video of the incident.
She asked if murder was the consequence for “drugs” or “resisting arrest”, what was the fit consequence for murder.
Among those replying under the post was Jamaica’s dancehall artiste Spice.
“If we comply we die, if we unarmed we die, if we hands up we die, if we face down and handcuffed we still gonna die,” she wrote, adding #Justiceforall #equalrights.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has launched a probe into Taylor’s death. The father and son pair of Gregory and Travis McMichael were charged with Arbery’s murder, while William Bryan Jr, the man who recorded the shooting, was also arrested and charged with felony murder. (SAT)
