GOVERNMENT HAS STEPPED IN to bring “solutions and commitments” to the issues affecting air traffic controllers at the Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA).
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of International Transport, Gabrielle Springer-Taylor, yesterday chaired a more than three-hour meeting between GAIA management, the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) and the controllers, at the airport.
“We are satisfied that the matters raised by the air traffic controllers today [yesterday] have been well ventilated and my ministry and the Civil Aviation Department are committed to working with the NUPW to bring closure to the issues,” Springer-Taylor said in a GAIA Press statement.
NUPW president, Walter Maloney, said the concerns “had been ongoing” for several years but he was satisfied the meeting had found solutions and commitments to resolving the outstanding issues raised by the controllers.
During the midnight shift last Friday and the morning shift last Saturday, all air traffic controllers reported sick. It is still unclear why the controllers took this action.
That action resulted in some challenges for many travellers on Saturday. Yesterday, most flights were back on schedule. (CA)
