(CNN) — Just weeks after a blizzard halted planes and dumped mounds of snow on the Northeast, travelers in New York and New England will get an encore today, with more snow expected and flight cancellations piling up.
A winter storm that turned roads into ice rinks in the Southeast — coupled with a storm from the Plains — could leave 12 to 16 inches of snow in Boston and 8 to 12 inches of snow in New York City by late Wednesday.
As of this morning, every state except Florida had snow on the ground, including Hawaii, according to CNN meteorologist Sean Morris.
Winds will increase across the Northeast, particularly along the New England coast, the Hydrometeorological Prediction Center in Camp Springs, Maryland.
A band of moderate to heavy snow is expected to move north rapidly along the coast today, with heavy precipitation leaving southern Maine by tonight, the center said.
Meanwhile, most domestic flights at New York’s John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports and New Jersey’s Newark Liberty airports were canceled through early afternoon , said Ron Marsico, spokesman for The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Officials declared a “weather emergency” and advised motorists to stay off the roads. The move restricts parking and allows authorities to remove vehicles that block roadways or impede snow plows.
