The historic baobab tree in Warrens St Michael will not be removed.
A story carried in today’s DAILY NATION erroneously stated that the tree, which is about 300 years old would be down as part of the Greater Warrens Traffic Safety Improvement Project.
However, the tree which will be removed is in fact a sandbox tree which is currently located opposite the baobab.
A statement sent from the Ministry of Transport and Works today stated: “Contrary to a report on page six of the Daily Nation of Monday March 21, the removal of the 300- year-old baobab tree at Warren’s was never included in the scope of works for the Greater Warrens Traffic Safety Improvement Project which got underway in January this year.
“The Ministry is cognizant of the historical nature of this tree and its importance to the Barbadian landscape. The only tree to be removed in the project is a sandbox tree which is located across the road from the baobab tree and this will be replaced by a number of other perennial plants.
“Another sandbox tree opposite One Accord Plaza will remain and will form the centre of the roundabout planned for that area.” (CA)
