Lovers of theatre were at Frank Collymore Hall recently for opening night when the Gale Theatre of Barbados & London presented the Caribbean premiere of American playwright Katori Hall’s The Mountaintop.
The Olivier Award-winning play is set on April 3, 1968, in room 306 of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, where late civil rights leader Dr Martin Luther King Jr retired on the night before his assassination.
It is an encounter between King (played by British actor Richard Pepple) and a mysterious young maid, Camae (played by Barbadian Keisha Pope).
The doyenne of local theatre Dr Cynthia Wilson and stage veterans Rosemary and David Neilands were spotted among the audience that also included some sponsors of the Gale Theatre, among them Sharon Carmichael and her husband Dr Trevor Carmichael.
It was the fifth season of the Gale Theatre’s Barbados productions and was under the patronage of Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth Stephen Lashley.
