Barbados’ oldest centenarian James Emmanuel Sisnett has passed. He was 113 years old.

According to the Gerontology Research Group, Sisnett is the only living verified Barbadian supercentenarian.

Sisnett was trained as a blacksmith and later worked in a factory making sugar and syrup until his retirement in 1970.

The Barbados Association of Retired Persons in a statement following Sisnett’s passing today, expressed sincere condolences to his family.

“Mr Sisnett was the oldest person in the western hemisphere and he was the only living verified Barbadian supercenternarian and last surviving verified black man born in the 19th century. He was a long standing member of BARP and was made an honorary member since September 2010. A regular attendee at the St Luke's Anglican Church, he will be remembered as a fine example of active aging and positive living. May he rest in peace”.
