BOB GIBSON and Andy Edghill emerged champions when the Barbados Golf Association (BGA) staged its first tournament for 2017.
They posted a nett 62 in the BGA’s New Year Two-Ball Scramble at the Rockley Club last weekend in a competitive tournament where final scores were determined on 25 per cent of combined handicaps.
Gibson and Edghill edged second-placed finishers Ivan Codrington and Zerina Belgrave (net 62.5) and were a stroke better than third-placed Pamela and Clarence Hiles (net 63). Fourth were Orlando Crichlow and Julia Stephenson (63.25).
Sixty-six players, including several visitors, junior national players and a number of Barbados and West Indies cricketers, took part in the tournament which allowed partners to choose their best positions on the fairways and greens in trying to get the ball from tee to hole.
A notable performance came from West Indies Test and One-Day captain Jason Holder, who teamed with fellow cricketer Shamarh Brooks to register a net 64, which placed them among the top ten, while opening batsman Dwayne Smith partnered junior national Iz Hustler, as they posted 69.
BGA secretary Trenton Weekes thanked all players for supporting the event that provided a great start to the 2017 golfing calendar and also commended the staff at the Rockley Club for hosting the event and providing a course in good shape. (PR)
