Perennial successful performers at the Huntsman World Senior Games Barbados head off to Utah tomorrow with the goal of surpassing their record haul of 83 medals in 2009.
Manager Rawle Clarke said that Barbados would be fielding its best team with a number of returning and new additions to the squad expected to reap even more glory at the Games.
“Pearl Yearwood did not attend the games last year and she is always one of our top performers in the 55-59 age-group,” he said.
“Yearwood, in conjunction with Ainley Lovell, should continue to do well in their group, while we welcome first-timers Atherley Burrowes and Henderson Waltress who we expect to medal repeatedly in the 50-54 group,” he said.
The manager is optimistic of capturing at least 90 medals and perhaps going past the five records gained last year.
“On that occasion, Jennifer Swanson-Jones and Wendy Barrow-Smith were realising their dreams of wearing the blue and gold as competitors once again and they had broken two world records in the 50-54. That duo will be back for their second stint at the games.
The only foreign-based competitor in the squad will be John Brooks.
The competition is expected to be at its toughest this year since the games will be used as qualifiers for the 2012 Senior Olympics in Houston, Texas.
Since September 16, more than 10 000 competitors had registered from 15 countries to take part in 22 disciplines. (KB)
