MATTERS OF NATIONAL SECURITY are not the business of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW).
That was the clear message sent by Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler yesterday as he responded to claims by the NUPW’s senior industrial relations officer Wayne Walrond, who said that the absorption of the Customs Excise Department into the Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA) could compromise national security.
“Security is not an issue for the union and I don’t know why the union is getting itself involved in that,” Sinckler told members of the media following a book donation to Eagle Hall Primary School.
“National security issues are dealt with by the personnel and the ministries that are responsible for national security. And nobody is going to reform a customs system that compromises its core function,” he continued. (AD)
