ARTHUR SMITH PRIMARY is gunning for this year’s Junior Kadooment crown.
And if the enthusiasm of the pupils modelling five of the six sections is matched by the entire band together with the creativity of their costumes, then they may actually be a serious threat.
Under grey skies yesterday, bandleader and Class 1 teacher Keisha Grannum revealed the costumes to wild cheers of students assembled in the courtyard.
With the theme What We Do, the costumes showcased aspects of the St Matthias, Christ Church school’s activities like the Young Dragons Club (karate club); Butterfly Club (the before and after-care programme); Choir (section on the performing arts); and Brownies and Cub Scouts. Also on show was the Our School section, with the couple adorned in blue.
Missing was the Zouave section that will seek to showcase Barbados’ heritage.
Principal Jennifer Hoyte said the band was the school’s way of helping the children understand the culture of the island while allowing them to identify with what was Barbadian.
“Crop Over is we t’ing,” said Hoyte, adding the children should be exposed to it in a positive way.
Grannum said she was happy to get the children involved in an activity where they could be creative as well as express themselves. She expects to have more than 100 members on parade for Junior Kadooment, which will be held at the National Stadium on July 23.
The teacher is particularly pleased that the school is mounting its first band in the island’s 50th year of Independence. (SP)
