THEY BOTH carry the same name and yesterday ten-year-old Peter Daniel Gibbs made his illustrious grandfather Peter Gibbs proud.

With his granddaddy, who bravely swam across Lake Ontario in 2004, and other family members cheering him on, the St Winifred’s Class 4 student impressively won the National Sports Council’s Primary Schools’ senior boys’ cross country 2 000-metre race on the Wildey Gymnasium circuit.

St Angela’s Kobi Hutson, one of the standout performers at last year’s NAPSAC, was second with Deacons’ Amari Welch, third.

St Marks’ Ilahtrinity Armstrong and Hilda Skeene’s Mahkaya Campbell completed the top five.

Daniel Gibbs shared the spotlight with Eagle Hall’s Sherene Jackman, Rashad Harris of Reynold Weekes and George Lamming’s Ryanna Grant as the four individual age group winners.

Jackman was the day’s first winner, taking the Class 1 and 2 girls’ 1200-metre race from St Giles’ Tamarah Hoyte and Wilkie Cumberbatch’s Neveah Barnett-Waithe. Wesley Hall’s Danica Lorde and St Catherine’s Deneisha Forde were fourth and fifth respectively with Naima Edwards of Wilkie Cumberbatch, sixth.

Harris then triumphed in the Class 1 and 2 combined boys’ race, also over 1200 metres.

St Winifred’s Tony White ran a smart race to be second while Shaquan Belle of Bayley’s made up a lot of ground over the last 400 metres to be third, finishing ahead of Wesley Hall’s Zachary Alexander (fourth) and St Stephen’s Tyshae Headley (fifth).

Wesley Hall did extremely well to take the team title in this age group with four boys – Alexander (4th), Javonte Griffith (6th), Christopher Lestrode (8th) and Thierry Corbin (10th) – among the top-ten finishers. Tosh Jones of St Winifred’s finished a creditable seventh.

The front-running Grant was the star runner among the Class 3 and 4 girls’ race, over 2 000 metres. She maintained a 10-metre lead on second place Wilkie Cumberbatch’s Kaya Kellman-Wall while St Winifred’s Zara Gaskin came third.

Wilkie Cumberbatch’s Sherika Alleyne and Christiana Edwards were fourth and fifth respectively and with their schoolmate Anissa Harris, finishing 63rd, the Pine-based school emerged as the senior girls’ queens.
