Officials at the Barbados Community College are scratching their heads over how to encourage more young men to enter the institution as figures continue to show females outnumbering males by more than two to one.
Principal Dr Gladstone Best and chairman of the board Stephen Broome voiced their concerns about the gender imbalance during the college’s 41st graduation ceremony, held at the Wildey Gymnasium of the Garfield Sobers Complex on Saturday evening.
For the 2013-14 academic year student enrolment totalled 3 620 – 1 180 males and 2 440 females, with males in the majority only in the divisions of computer studies and technology.
“We remain conscious of the need to retain more males in the education system,” Best told the gathering.
