QEH feeling strain

BARBADOS HAS A diabetes and non-communicable diseases pandemic on its hands.

And the situation has become so dire that chief executive officer of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), Dr Dexter James, says they may have to institute some changes to help cope with the increasing strain.

Celebrations for the 50th birthday were a bit tempered yesterday as James lamented the fact that, in the last two weeks alone, 25 new patients have been admitted to the Dialysis Unit.

“These are patients that hitherto, had not been seen by public services. They may have been seen by the private sector doc on medication, they may go non-compliant, failures, present to A&E and had to go straight to the Dialysis Unit,” James explained.

He said those new admissions have placed additional strain on their human resources. (YB)
