400 candles

As if symbolically weeping for the victims of road accidents, the skies opened and it rained.

Similarly did tears flow freely on Sunday night as people gathered at a candlelight ceremony to remember family members and friends who died in road accidents.

The atmosphere at Queen’s Park, near the Tree Of Remembrance For Road Traffic Accidents, was shrouded in gloom and some celebration as a number of people, still grief-stricken, openly shared memories of their loved ones.

The ceremony opened with a prayer as motorists were encouraged to reduce their speed on the roads. And as the sun quickly descended, almost 400 candles were lit in remembrance of all the road deaths in the island since 2000.
