The arrest and charging of an Internet blogger with alleged “malicious communication” in relation to a Government minister, followed by a strong warning to social media users by cops, yesterday provoked a torrent of robust responses on Facebook.
Police public relations officer Acting Assistant Superintendent David Welch disclosed yesterday afternoon that Omar Shawn Watson, 39, of Maxwell, Christ Church, had been charged with the “offence of malicious communication” and would appear in the District “A” Magistrates’ Court this morning.
“Sometime in mid-November 2014,” Welch said, “a message appeared on social media which was menacing in character and caused the Hon. Michael Lashley annoyance, distress and anxiety. Investigations led to the arrest of Watson.”
While the police PRO did not offer details, sources said the alleged malicious communication related to comments posted on an alleged incident that reportedly occurred recently at the St Catherine Social and Cultural Club in Bayfield, St Philip. (RRM/JS)
