The future of distance running may already be here.

Fast-rising Coleridge and Parry athlete Jonathan Jones delivered a performance that belied his tender age, as the 15-year-old captured his first ever Powerade Run Barbados event by sweeping to victory in yesterday’s ICBL 3K at Bay Street.

The more seasoned Jade Searles of perennial track and field queens Springer had an equally impressive win in the women’s category on a day marred by the inadequacies of the electronic timing system and intermittent showers.

But the real story was that of Jones’ showing, which saw the talented teen improve on last year’s 15th place finish by powering away from a more experienced Hakeem Newton down the Bay Street stretch to clock nine minutes, 46.63 seconds.

“It was very hard because Hakeem was with me for the entire run and he was pushing me very hard and I was only able to outsprint him towards the end,” said Jones of the victory.
