Big spending by some Barbadians in the nick of time just before Christmas could just be the boost the economy needs.

The heavy buying by shoppers has left some store owners feeling merry and bright about the start of the new year, which they are looking to with some optimism.

Operations manager at ShopSmart, Mark Niles, said that in the lead-up to Christmas Day, at least ten days before, they saw a noticeable increase in people buying and stocking up.

“During that time, people came early in the day and they came late, but they were buying. Bajans embrace Christmas and we celebrate it to the fullest no matter what,” he said.
