The two teachers’ unions in Barbados have adopted a zero tolerance to violence in schools.
So much so that the issue of security and discipline was among the joint concerns aired when the executives of the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union (BSTU) and the Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) met at the BSTU’s Belleville, St Michael headquarters on Monday evening.
Noting that violence was a “major” problem in schools, BSTU president Mary Redman said it was one of the issues which “fundamentally” affected certain terms and conditions of service of members of both unions.
The BSTU had to flex its muscle at the beginning of this term in a matter relating to the “assault and battery” of a temporary teacher at the hands of a student at a country school. It is also understood that the child repeatedly made threats against the teacher’s life during the attack.
