THE FIRST THING the new president of the Barbados Bar Association wants to see changed is the empty bench where a Chief Magistrate should be sitting.
Liesel Weekes, who started her one-year tenure last week, believes the lack of a Chief Magistrate since the elevation of Justice Pamela Beckles to the High Court, is having a definite effect on the carriage of justice at the Magistrates’ Court level.
“There are several issues that have been identified regarding the way the judicial system is functioning, and we need to address those very urgently,” Weekes told the SUNDAY SUN.
“We have left a vacancy where she (Beckles) was, and we’ve not had one since her appointment. Certainly that affects how justice is done and seen to be done, for the people in the jurisdiction particularly,” Weekes added. (BA)
