THE DIRECTOR of the National Task Force on Crime Prevention, Cheryl Willoughby, has called on communities to activate dormant neighbourhood watch groups.
She made the appeal yesterday, as one of the panellists on Voice of Barbados’ Sunday Brass Tacks.
“I am advocating for the reactivation of dormant neighbourhood watches,” she said. “It’s important that neighbourhoods [organise] and take ownership in neighbourhood watches.”
According to Willoughby, the impetus for the groups must come from the communities, with assistance from the police, rather than the police having “to go out there and motivate persons” to join or set up neighbourhood watches which encourage vigilance by householders in villages to discourage crime, especially burglary.
