Slow start

THE BATTLE BETWEEN BAT AND BALL was almost attritional but the level of intrigue remained compelling until the end as Barbados Pride and Leeward Islands Hurricanes shared the honours on the first day of their fifth-series West Indies Cricket Board Professional Cricket League (WICB PCL) first-class match, yesterday.

In the face of a decidedly negative approach by the Leewards’ bowlers on a helpful pitch, the home team crawled to 182 for four off 90 overs at a pedestrian scoring rate of 2.02 two runs per over after they were invited bat.

Barbados Pride captain Kraigg Brathwaite played a typically stoic hand before falling in the evening session for 72, and it was left to fifth-wicket pair Roston Chase and Shane Dowrich, who joined in an unbroken partnership of 58, to ensure that the hosts’ first  innings suffered no further damage by the close.
