Lord Robert Gavron, who established the Lord Gavron Scholarship that benefited close to two dozen Barbadian cricketers, died at his home in England over the weekend at the age of 84.

Lord Gavron established an award for one outstanding Barbados youth cricketer in 2001 and in 2007 it was increased to two youth players annually.

All-rounder Ryan Nurse was the first recipient of the scholarhip that has benefited 22 players, including West Indies players Kraigg Brathwaite, Jason Holder and Kemar Roach.

Lord Gavron was a printing tycoon and was described as one of the more cultivated members of the new Blairite aristocracy which entered the House of Lords after the Labour victory of 1997.

He made his fortune by founding St Ives, the magazine and book printer. (MK)
