Canadian hospitality jobs hard to come by

CANADA’S NEW POLICY on employment for temporary migrant workers has had a “severe impact” on the Barbados Government’s efforts to fill jobs in that country’s hospitality sector.

Minister of Labour Dr Esther Byer made the admission this morning during a meeting at the ministry to review the programme that has landed Barbadians short-term jobs at hotels, restaurants and other businesses.

“We have had some difficulties sourcing opportunities for you in Canada, especially (at) some of those places we looked to traditionally to be taking workers,” she told people who have worked with the programme or want to get involved in it.

Dr Byer said the Canadian government had made it more difficult and costly for businesses to recruit migrant labour. (TY)
