HAYLEY MATTHEWS is the new darling of cricket in Barbados.

Unlike Kraigg Brathwaite, who wasn’t rewarded for his outstanding Test performances with the West Indies team last year, Matthews was the star achiever when the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) held its annual awards ceremony at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre on Friday night.

The West Indies’ women’s team all-rounder and fledgling Barbados left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican were named the two Most Outstanding Cricketers Of 2014.

Matthews, 16, was also named Most Improved and Emerging Young Cricketer among the women, but her crowning moment came when she received the President’s Award from Joel Garner, who had earlier highlighted his association’s achievements during his welcome address.
