Jamaican drug accused fined

TWO JAMAICAN MEN appeared in court today accused of attempting to bring drugs into the island.

According to police, 39-year-old Christopher Lockhortor Ellis arrived by air from Jamaica on February 18 and was interviewed by police.

He was then referred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he passed 41 packages of cannabis which he had ingested.  The total weight was one pound.

When he appeared in the District “B” Magistrates’ Court, he pleaded guilty to all charges.

Ellis was fined $8 000 forthwith or eight months in prison on the charge of trafficking and $5 000 forthwith or six months in prison on the charge of importation. The sentences will run concurrently.

Meanwhile, he was convicted, reprimanded and discharged on the charge of possession and reprimanded and discharged for possession with intent to supply.

Appearing in the same court was Sydney Simpson who also pleaded guilty to similar charges.  He had arrived on a flight from Trinidad and Tobago on February 25. After being interviewed by police, he was referred to the QEH where he passed 132 packages of cannabis.

On the charge of possession he was fined $8 000 forthwith or nine months in prison and on the charge of trafficking, $15 000 forthwith or 12 months in prison. The sentences will run concurrently.

He was reprimanded and discharged on the charge of possession with intent to supply and convicted, reprimanded and discharged on the charge of importation. (PR/NB)
