A MEMBER OF THE Freundel Stuart Cabinet wants the voting age lowered by two years, while at the same time suggesting that it may be time for Barbados to do away with corporal punishment in schools.

The recommendations were put forward by Minister of Education Ronald Jones, and followed recent allegations of vote-buying in general elections as well as calls for the retention of the rod in schools.

Jones told a Christ Church South branch meeting of the Democratic Labour Party on Sunday night at St Lawrence Primary School that he was “looking forward to one day when 16-year-olds get the right to vote”.

“They give consent at 16, so why can’t they vote too at 16? Why can’t they become involved in the democratic traditions at 16 years old?” he questioned. (CW)
