THE WORLD CUP craved for a close contest after four disappointing mismatches in the quarter-finals.

What New Zealand and South Africa provided Monday night in the first semi-final went way beyond close.

It held the 40 000 in the stands at Auckland’s Eden Park along, no doubt, with the millions glued to their television sets in its spell from first ball to sensational last.

It was the penultimate delivery of the final over.

Delivered by Dale Steyn, the contemporary game’s highest rated fast bowler, it was hoisted for the winning six into the delirious New Zealand spectators at long-on by Grant Elliott, a 36-year-old understated cricketer ironically born and educated in South Africa. (TC)
