THE 2015 SUGAR CROP, already more than a month late, is back on track after a 36-hour stoppage.
Grinding at the lone sugar factory, Portvale, St James, had been halted on Wednesday night because of a leaking boiler tube.
But the action restarted yesterday afternoon, with the facility returning to a hive of activity, as numerous trailers filled with cane were weighed and offloaded for grinding.
The Barbados Agricultural Management Company’s (BAMC) technical manager for factories, John Goodman, explained that officials were forced to shut operations down in order to effect repairs to the malfunctioning boiler tube.
“We had to let the boiler tube cool down before we could fix it, which meant we had to stop grinding on Wednesday night,” Goodman explained to the SATURDAY SUN. (BA)
