THE MINISTRY OF the Environment and the Private Waste Haulers group have reached an interim agreement concerning the recently introduced tipping fee.

Yesterday morning the haulers had gathered outside the Sustainable Barbados Recycling Centre Inc (SBRC) in Vaucluse, St Thomas, after being refused entry. They said they had decided not to buy ticket books for the fee in protest and wished to get a meeting with Government to vent their concerns.

In a telephone interview, managing director of Simpson Trucking and Skip Services, Charles Read, said they later met with Minister of the Environment Dr Denis Lowe and Permanent Secretary Edison Alleyne and as a result would now be purchasing tickets.

“We have agreed to buy the tickets and start back operations. We left SBRC and met with Lowe and Alleyne and were able to talk through the issues. We are reasonably satisfied, although we have not resolved all the issues. We have received assurances there will be further meetings with the relevant Government departments,” he said. (CA)
