‘Dire’ straits

YET ANOTHER SNAG has hit the judicial system and is contributing to the backlog of cases still to be completed by the courts of Barbados.

This time it is the shortage of ink and paper, a complaint that arose in the District “A” Criminal Court 1 last week and was repeated yesterday.

The dire shortage had delayed the prosecution in its ability to complete files and make available copies of evidence needed to advance summary and preliminary trials.

Yesterday, as several matters had to be adjourned because of the shortage of ink and paper, Magistrate Douglas Frederick seemed appalled.

“I have never seen a situation like this, where there’s no ink for the photocopying machine, or paper,” he said, agreeing with prosecutor Station Sergeant Neville Watson’s view that “it’s dire”.
