THERE WILL BE no backing down on this one.

That was the defiant message from National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) president Akanni McDowall, who yesterday rejected criticism that he was young and overzealous and that his eagerness to strike was politically motivated.

McDowall told the SATURDAY SUN that with less than 48 hours to go before a national shutdown goes into effect, he was confident in the position that he and his executive council had taken to call a national strike in defence of 13 workers over the age of 60 who were dismissed from the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation (BIDC).

The trade unionist, whose youthful team was swept to office in the elections less than three months ago, said the union comprised a number of experienced heads whose input was sought before a decision to strike was pursued. (GE/YB)
