The rise of Barbadian surfer Josh Burke has been recognized by one of the world’s leading surfing magazines.
SURFING Magazine has invited Barbados’ 2010 and 2011 Under-16 and Under-18 National Junior champion to star in an article and video showcasing the Americas’ next generation of surfing powers.
The 15-year-old St Winifred’s student has been creating quite a stir on the international surfing scene, having recently been invited to Hawaii, Indonesia and California for the Red Bull Camp.
Burke also created history by becoming the first junior surfer from Barbados to qualify for the NSSA US Nationals Finals.
Jimmy Wilson, associate photo editor of SURFING Magazine, noted that when he was researching the surfers to bring from the East Coast, Burke’s performance on the American circuit merited a selection.
“After seeing some video of him on the Internet and hearing some opinions from various team managers as well as the staff at ESM (Eastern Surf Magazine), we decided it would be fitting to include him with leading world juniors,” Wilson added.
After finding out that he had been invited, Burke was ecstatic.
“It’s been an amazing journey already. I am blessed to have the opportunity to be travelling all over the world doing something I love and its truly an honour to be invited on this trip with these surfers that I already look up to,” he said. (RB)
