THE IMPORTANCE of drinking milk was on the timetable of Grantley Prescod Memorial Primary School as representatives from Pine Hill Dairy launched World School Milk Day at the Pine institution this morning.

World School Milk Day was established by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FOA) to encourage school children everywhere in the world to drink milk.

Primary schools across the island also have an opportunity to win a number of prizes by participating in an essay competition entitled From Grass to Glass: How Did My Milk Get Here. These prizes are BDS$1 000 for the winning school; the winning child gets a tablet and also a chance to win a personal savings account of $250.

“The essay writing competition will give you the opportunity to develop your essay writing skills as well as learn how milk gets from the farm into your house. It is a wonderful learning opportunity for you all,” said Henry Yearwood, category manager for juice and dairy at the Pine Hill Dairy as he spoke to class three students.

“I would like to come back here and present the prizes to Grantley Prescod to give prizes in the first week of November,” said Yearwood as he encouraged the children to be part of the essay writing contest.

Also addressing the students was Gregory Skeete author of the book entitled Milk Making. Skeete, who studied mechanical engineering, works in the production department of Pine Hill Dairy and he shared some tips with the children about what he does to produce the milk. (JS)
