ACROSS BARBADOS, mechanics leave vehicles, under repair or abandoned, by the side of the road.

For some this is just an eyesore. But that’s not all. The practice poses safety and environmental threats, according to the president of the Road Safety Association, Sharmane Roland-Bowen.

She said the dangers to road users came “especially at night when you have to change lanes and anytime you have to change lanes, there is an increased risk for accidents”.

The environmental concern arises from the potential for rodents or other pests which may be attracted to unused vehicles.

Roland-Bowen suggested that the practice should be made illegal to encourage individuals to properly dispose of the vehicles.
