Not even a rain-delayed start nor the absence of music to dance to could stop the children of the National Sports Council’s (NSC) annual summer camp from enjoying themselves at their mini Kadooment yesterday at the Netball Stadium.
For the second time, the organisers of the NSC camp decided to end their session with a Crop Over theme. Some of the children, ages six to 16, wore shredded red, yellow, blue or green t-shirts with the camp’s logo and some had flags or crafty headpieces with feathers, confetti and beads.
A downpour yesterday morning caused the 9 a.m opening ceremony to start 45 minutes late, and that was not the only hiccup of the day.
When the campers were queued and ready to start jumping, the generator on the music truck malfunctioned, and the deejay had no power source for his equipment, but the children unknowingly shouted “we ready for the road.”
The campers then sang popular soca songs while they pranced along the road. Upon their return to the Netball Stadium, onlookers watched the children as they sang Porgie and Murda’s hit song “Ben Up” and Peter Ram’s Road March winning soca hit “All Ah We”, some with their hands in the air and smiles on their faces.
Assistant Director of the National Sports Council, Mona Alleyne said the amount of campers decreased from 1500 last year to 1331 in 2015, with the boys out numbering the girls. She revealed that the Alexandra School was added to the list of venues for the camp this year after parents in the north complained about transportation costs to send their children to other locations.
Alleyne also said this year’s camp saw water polo and rugby added to the list activities.
