CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER of the Barbados Agriculture Society, James Paul, says there seems to be an underground market for produce and it’s causing a big loss to farmers.

“Obviously when you steal goods they have to go somewhere and there seems to be an underground market,” the CEO said during a press conference today.

He said since research has shown that cassava can be used in more products, farmers are planting increased quantities and thieves are now targeting the crop.

Paul said the BAS and other authorities must look to put certain measures in place to help protect farmers.

“We need to exercise closer monitoring of the farmers’ markets, we have to see where they are getting their goods from,” he said. (TKS/TG)
