Beckles breaks hurdles record

BARBADIAN  KIERRE BECKLES produced a sizzling record-setting run to advance to the semi-finals of the women’s 100-metre hurdles at the IAAF World Championships at Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing, China, yesterday.

Beckles finished second in the third heat in  a new Barbados record  of 12.88 seconds, smashing the previous mark of 12.98 seconds which she set last year.

United States’ Dawn Harper-Nelson won that heat in 12.79 seconds while Anne Zagre of Belgium was third in 12.90 seconds.

Brianna Rollins of the United States was the day’s fastest qualifier with a time of 12.67 seconds to win the fourth heat. Jamaica’s Shermaine Williams was second in a personal best time of 12.78 seconds while Croatia’s Andrea Ivancevic was third in 12.88 seconds.
