FOUR OF Barbados’ top road tennis players will get within touching distance of a big payday when the semi-finals of the Barbados Public Workers’ Cooperative Limited Monarchs Of The Court are staged from 7:30 tonight at the Flow Sports Club, Wildey.

The women, who are competing for the first time with a first prize of $4 000, will see the slimly built Rachel Smith battling the extremely fit Sheldene Walrond while Abigail Haynes clashes with the seemingly invincible Kim Holder. The women will play two best of three.

With a first prize of $10 000 the goal, the most successful male player Julian “Michael Jackson” White faces the resurgent Winston “Charles McEnroe” Griffith while No.1 seed Mark “Venom” Griffith battles the young, talented Darius “Baraccus” Gaskin in a three-best-of-five duel.

Both Walrond and Smith, who will open the night’s action, are aggressive players and the one that takes the first game will have the edge in forcing the loser to change their style to cautious defence.
