THE DISTRICT “C” Magistrates’ Court in St Philip was identified yesterday as a major hold-up in at least four cases before the No. 5 Supreme Court.
Justice Jacqueline Cornelius said that while the court was prepared to deal with the matters, there were no depositions from the rural court, even though from very early the accused had indicated they intended to plead guilty once the matter went to the High Court.
The No. 5 Supreme Court is in the process of clearing a backlog that involves about 330 cases and has set a mark of 50 cases daily for status reports or results.
The exercise which started Monday is being conducted in two phases: dealing with the oldest matters involving suspects on remand, followed by the oldest of those on bail. (TKS)
