Jones 11th at World Indoors

Barbados’ campaign at the World Athletics Indoor Championships came to an end as Akela Jones finished 11th in the women’s long jump event in Belgrade, Serbia.

Jones had a best leap of 6.55 metres in the final on Sunday.

The event was won by Serbia’s Ivana Vuleta who recorded a world lead mark of 7.06 metres. Ese Brume of Nigeria was second with a season’s best 6.85m and Britain’s Lorraine Ugen took bronze, also with a season’s best 6.82.

On Friday, Barbadian quarter miler Sada Williams bowed out after a third-place finish in heat one of the women’s 400-metre. The Barbadian ace sprinter, competing in her second-ever indoor event, clocked 52.65 seconds behind Lieke Klaver of the Netherlands (51.96) and Ireland’s Phil Healy (51.75).

On Saturday, sprinter Mario Burke finished sixth the first semi-final of the men’s 60-metre event, clocking 6.67 seconds. Burke advanced to the final 16 after finishing second in heat two of the preliminary round. (AGB)
