GOVERNMENT YESTERDAY moved a step closer to bringing the country into the heavily debated 24-hour society, just before the busy holiday season.
Minister of Industry, Commerce and Small Business Donville Inniss who led off debate in the House of Assembly on the Shops Bill 2015, said that not only would shops be allowed to operate between 7 a.m. on Mondays right through to 10 p.m. on Sundays, but there were certain measures and guidelines that employers must adhere to if they did not want to run afoul of the law.
In addition to being mandated to provide a proper eating area, adequate seating (one seat for every three workers or one seat for an individual, an adequate water supply, fire exits, escape routes, first aid kits on the premises, payment for overtime and not forcing employees to work beyond a 40-hour work week), he said the provisions allowed for “real time” arrangements.
